Columbia, Mo. -- September 2008 (Journalism School
Centennial)
The University Of Missouri at Columbia celebrated its
100th anniversary in September. The university invited
back all of the alumni from Mizzou's journalism graduates to participate
in the celebration, which included networking and educational sessions
on journalism.
My favorite session focused on the alumni who had won
Pulitzer prizes for their writing, and they shared their stories. They
agreed that you can't just set as a goal to win a Pulitzer. Instead,
you have to be at the right place at the right time and capture a
newsworthy story representative of that point in time.

Seneca, Mo. -- 21 June 2007 (Book Review)
While many daily newspapers are trimming back
on book reviews to save costs, rural newspapers still strive to
serve their communities with a wide variety of information. The
Seneca News-Dispatch has served its community since 1882. Located
in the southwest corner of Missouri, Seneca is approximately 77
miles from Springfield, Mo., and 90 miles from Tulsa, Okla.
On 21 June 2007, the Seneca News-Dispatch provided a book review
of Legends, Leaders, Legacies in the newspaper's print edition
on Page 2A. If you would like to see the review, use

Manhattan -- 3 June 2007 (BookExpo America --
BEA)
Author Susan Vollmer attended BookExpo America
in New York City. One of the points commonly made during
the sessions included how difficult it is to obtain book reviews. Some
of the larger newspapers are cutting back on this type of coverage. As
a result, blogs are becoming an alternative outlet for book reviews
and discussion.
In today's publishing industry, it's difficult
for small independent presses to make it. If you like
this site, send the URL (http://www.susanv.com/) to someone
you know. Someday, it will reach the tipping point.

Bootheel of Missouri -- 26 May 2007 (School Reunion)
The school that Susan Vollmer attended in the
Bootheel of Missouri celebrated its 80th anniversary this year by
inviting all graduates from Delta C-7 in Deering, Mo. This
community like many in rural areas depends on the school, the post
office and a place of worship to bring people together. In
April 2006, the nearby town of Caruthersville was one of the hardest
hit areas by a tornado. More than a year later, their
school buildings remained damaged and students were still attending
classes in FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Assistance) trailers. Homes
still need to be torn down, repaired or rebuilt.
The Bootheel of Missouri is about a four-hour
drive south of St. Louis. The closest metropolitan area
is Memphis, Tenn., where the major network stations are broadcast
from. See link below for photos of the Bootheel.
